Review of Lesson 5

Recycled Parts Trim Time

The estimator must apply a labour time to separate the recycled part from the welded components
A judgement allowance is applied on all welded-on recycled parts for the trim time, and must be listed separate from the remove and replace (Re & Re) time on the CL14.

If a recycled quarter panel is purchased as part of the repair on a vehicle, the estimator must apply a judgement time (allow extra time) to the recycled part. This allows the repair facility to remove only the part(s) necessary to complete the repair.

For example:
The recycler cuts the whole quarter section off the vehicle and sends it to the repair facility. The repair facility needs only the outer panel. The estimator would allow time to remove the outer panel from the section. That time is above the Re & Re time required for the shop to put the panel on the vehicle.

Parts Standards

Air Conditioning Components:All components must be capped and sealed at time of evacuation and dismantling of part.

Quarter Panels:All quarter panel cuts are discussed with the recycled part supplier and the repair facility will verify with ICBC that the vehicle repairs will proceed prior to ordering the parts.

Doors:Doors include base outer trim, handles, weather strip, specified glass, and the window mechanism. Doors do not include mirrors, seat belts, inner trim panels, hinges, or electrical harnesses. All other attached parts are excluded unless agreed to by the estimator and the recycled part supplier, and listed on the invoice.

Mouldings for doors, fenders, and quarter panels are not guaranteed to be correct unless there is confirmation between the estimator and the recycled part supplier.

If one of the excluded items on the recycled door is included, the recycled part supplier will be responsible for the labour costs to remove the item(s). The excluded parts will only be included when it has been agreed to by both parties for extra cost and listed on the invoice.

Electrical:All electrical components are:

  • Checked by the recycled part supplier and tested, whenever possible, to ensure proper working condition prior to delivery, and
  • Sold on an exchange basis. The condition of the core will not be a factor in the exchange.

Example: alternator, starter

Engines:All engines must be drained of all fluids by the recycler prior to shipment. It is the repair facility’s responsibility to refill these parts with the appropriate fluids at time of installation.
All engines must have heat tabs installed, and are sold on an exchange basis.

NOTE: The core condition is not a factor, but a core as complete as the one supplied must be returned in a dry condition or is subject to an environmental surcharge.

Glass:Heated glass must be inspected and tested by the recycler to ensure proper operation of the heating tabs and elements prior to delivery. Condition of glass must be determined and accurately represented by the recycled part supplier at the time of the initial parts request.

Radiators:Radiators must:

  • Be visually inspected
  • Be pressure tested to ensure proper working condition prior to delivery
  • Have radiator hose openings capped.

Rear Hatch Assemblies:Rear hatch assemblies will be supplied complete with glass and hinges, less struts and inner trim panel. If one of the excluded items on the recycled hatch is included, the recycled part supplier will be responsible for the labour costs to remove the item(s). The excluded parts will only be included when it has been agreed to by both parties for extra cost and listed on the invoice. Spoilers are not included in purchase price, unless it is agreed between the estimator and the recycled part supplier and listed on the invoice.

Steering & Suspension:All components will be cleaned prior to delivery. Painting of steering parts by the recycled part supplier is to be discussed and agreed to between the repair shop and the recycled part supplier prior to shipping the part.

Front and rear suspension assemblies include:

  • Knuckles
  • Hubs
  • Lower control arms
  • Struts, or
  • Upper control arms.

Painting of suspensions parts by the recycled part supplier should be discussed between the person ordering and the recycled part supplier prior to shipping the part.
