EV Training for Tow Operators

Welcome to the EVfriendly tow operator training course. This program is made possible through the financial assistance and support of the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation, Go Electric campaign. If you have any questions or require assistance on how to complete this course, please contact evfriendly@ara.bc.ca.

Who should take this course

Only trained staff should work on or near EVs. This course is for required for management, tow operators, traffic control persons, lot administrators, and any other employee that will work on or near EVs. It is recommended for all other employees.

Disclaimer

This training is provided in conjunction with the EVfriendly Certified Tow Operator certification program. The program is for certification of an automotive towing business, and this training, for applicable employees, is a requirement of that process, but is NOT a certification program for the individual employees in repairing of hybrids, plug-in hybrids, or battery-electric vehicles. Where applicable, we provide information about third-party training for individual certification.

Course content

Important! Please Read!

This course consists of four modules, with each module divided into lessons covering a specific topic. Lesson material is a mix of text, images, and videos. You must read all of the text and watch the videos, and we highly recommend that you take notes, as some of the information in the videos is not duplicated elsewhere.

At the end of each module, you will be asked to complete a short quiz. You must complete this quiz by answering all questions correctly, and you can take a as many retries as you need. We strongly recommend you go back and review the module material before trying again.

We recommended you set aside uninterrupted time to go through this course. If you must leave, or if you wish to complete in sections, remember to log off (if you are using a shared computer). You can return at any time and pick up where you left off. You can read the course material and/or watch the videos as many times as you wish, but make sure you read and understand all material before attempting the quizzes or the final exam. The final exam requires that you answer 80% of the questions correctly, and you have a maximum of three retries. Again, we recommend going back and reviewing the material before attempting the final exam again. You can leave a quiz or exam and return…the system will save your place.

Once you complete a module quiz, you can proceed to the next module. Please remember to mark each lesson and module complete when you are confident you are ready to proceed.

Course Navigation

Watch this video tutorial on course navigation:

Upon Completion

When you reach the end of the course, you will be assessed on what you have learned, with a final exam. The passing threshold is 85% and you have a maximum of three retries. Once you have passed the exam, you can download your certificate of completion. It is important that you save your certificate and provide a copy to your employer for training verification in case of an audit.

After the first year, re-certification of the business is required every three years. As electric vehicle technology evolves, we will be upgrading our courses. You and your employer will receive a reminder about when and how to upgrade your training.

Some confusing information

Some conflicting information in airbag and battery isolation. -The word recovery seems to be used the same as just towing a vehicle. Is there a difference ? -Would have like to see some more specific examples of towing vehicles in different states of repair. -The word lockout has different meanings to tow operators. -video errors when trying to watch a video again - exam errors when marked
