Review of Lesson 1.1

Procedures:

  1. Every vehicle to be processed will be assigned a stock number and work order. The stock number will be recorded on the work order.
  2. The vehicle will be placed in the dismantle area, usually transported by forklift.
  3. De-garbage vehicle before placing on hoist. Remove all paper, plastic, broken glass, old food, etc. Check for spills and leaks, and be sure to wear gloves.
  4. Check engine fluids before starting the engine.
  5. If safe to do so, start the engine and bring it to normal operating temperature.
  6. While the engine is running, check the operation of all electrical switches, gauges, etc. and confirm the odometer reading matches that recorded on the work order. Note any discrepancies on the work order.
  7. Once you have confirmed that the power seats are in working order, the seats should be unbolted.
  8. Test the charging system and listen for irregular noises from the steering, A/C and other components with moving parts. Note any discrepancies on the work order.

Quality Control:

  1. Common practise is to transport vehicles with a forklift. Forklift certification is mandatory to operate a forklift.
  2. The engine oil should not be discoloured or smell burnt.
  3. It may not be safe to start a vehicle with severe front-end damage, battery damage, fire damage, or any other condition that may create a hazard when starting the engine.

Health & Safety:

  1. Standard Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) includes safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, ear protection, dust mask, and high-visibility safety vest. Injuries result from failure to protect yourself. Don’t get lazy – think Safety First!
  2. The risks include parts or debris falling off the vehicle, cuts and scrapes from sharp edges, etc.
  3. Ensure the vehicle is secure before transporting with forklift or raising on a hoist. Secure any loose, unstable parts. This is especially important if the vehicle is badly damaged.
  4. It is unsafe to work beneath a suspended load. Do not climb under a vehicle that is suspended on a forklift!
