Review of Lesson 1.4

Procedures:

  1. Check to make sure there are no leaks in the equipment before plugging devices into the vehicle.
  2. Check for “mouth leaks” when using the system.
  3. Identify and record the type of refrigerant contained in the system.
  4. Plug the recovery on the high and low pressure points.
  5. Collect the fluids.
  6. Use appropriate collection containers specific to refrigerant type.
  7. Let stand for 10 minutes, then check guages for the presence of any residual gas.
  8. Record information in the registry.

Quality Control:

  1. Only a qualified person can perform the recovery of refrigerants.
  2. Typically, vehicle dismantlers hire an approved person with mobile equipment to remove refrigerants and complete the paperwork.
  3. “Approved person” is a person as defined in the ODS regulation.
  4. Confirm if R-12 or R-134A was removed and note on work order.

Health & Safety:

  1. You must be ODS certified in order to remove ODS.
  2. Specific tools include a specialized pump (evacuate machine) for refrigerant gases and a gas detector.
  3. Refrigerants are harmful to the environment and their recovery is subject to strict environmental legislation.
  4. A dismantler must never allow the release of ODS into the atmosphere.
