Lesson 2.1 – Air Bags

Preamble

Confirm the Battery has been removed or disconnected (negative cable first) for a minimum of 20 minutes.
Unclip the small covers hiding the mount screws.
Unscrew bolts and lift the bag out toward you.
Unclip the wire harness.
Disconnect the electrical wires.

If you’re not absolutely sure of the discharge time wait at least 30 minutes.
New modules will have hidden clips and pressure points that need to be pressed in order to unclip the bag itself. Always check the vehicles OEM dealership or aftermarket part information for correct removal procedures.
Refer to the owner’s manual for location of air bags.
Refer to company policy when removing airbags.
Any damage to the module mounting locations, studs, nuts, flanges, brackets, reaction plate, or wiring will render the module unusable and must be rejected. Any deformation or contamination of the cover surface, seams, edges, or attachments will render the module unusable.
It is important to disconnect the connections of the airbags. Do not cut them. Cutting may cause accidental deployment of the bag.

Special tools: small screw drivers, needle nose pliers.

Risks include the fact that the contents of a non-activated explosive cartridge are harmful to the environment and should never be sent for compacting with the hulk. It should be recovered or deployed.
Other risks include awkward posture under the dashboard.
If you are not sure of, or unable to determine the correct removal procedure DO NOT use force to remove the module from the vehicle.
Do not position yourself in front of an air bag module during removal.
Damaged air bags can be dangerous.
While carrying an air bag module, make sure the cover is facing away from you. This will minimize any injury in the event of accidental deployment.
